The latest and greatest from Zinc or Swim
Kia ora Zinc or Swim Family!
Welcome back to another exciting edition of the Zinc or Swim Journal - the fourth instalment. We hope the winter months (for those in the southern hemisphere) have been positive and that despite the cooler climate you have all been out enjoying what nature has to offer.
What Have Your Two Favourite Pasties Been Up To?
A lot has happened since the last update, so lets start with the big news first. Sauce has decided he can’t handle a long-distance relationship any longer. The sleepless nights he endured, knowing that I'm applying zinc onto other people all the way in Japan, became too much for him. So New Zealand’s favourite Ginger will be departing the Blues and the Northland Taniwha to join the Toyota Verblitz in Nagoya, Japan. No doubt he will quickly become Japan’s favourite Ginger.
With the end of the Super Rugby season, Sauce has had a couple of months to get stuck into the Japanese language and is now able to order sushi without as many confusing looks as he usually gets. As the days count down to his departure, he’s been spending most of his time up at Shippies (Tauroa Bay) getting absolutely pitted whilst trying to keep up with training so he can make sure Beauden Barret has someone to pass the ball to.
As for me, the Japanese rugby season ended in mid-May, so for the first time in a long time, I had the opportunity to get some travelling done. My wife and I visited some amazing places and experienced some very different cultures. Over the course of six weeks, we travelled to Turkey, Israel, Jordan, and Greece. Every place we visited was special in its own way — whether it was the incredible cityscape of Istanbul, the vibrant diversity of Tel Aviv, or the beautiful blue and white beaches of Milos. There were some long days walking in the summer sun to see the amazing sights, and the each day we applied our ‘Sundaze’ natural sunscreen before heading out. I know its my own product so I’m definitely biased - but using our natural sunscreen for 6 weeks straight my skin felt amazing and we didn’t get burnt once.
After the adventure, we faced our first Japanese summer, and it has absolutely shocked us. If you’d enjoy being in a sauna all day, come to Japan in July/August! As soon as you step out of the house you’re starting to sweat, and with no daylight savings here it’s full daylight at 4am. That being said, its good to be back in a routine, and training for what’s going to be an epic season for Japan Top League.
